- MIXED MEDIA ENCAUSTICS -

Encaustic or hot wax painting is a process in which heat is used to melt a mixture of beeswax and dammar resin to create a wonderfully varied artistic outcomes. Photography, charcoal, pigment, alcohol inks, oil paints, organic material and more can be added into the layers of wax to create mixed media pieces with a beautifully eclectic depth. For my own process, I am currently incorporating my own photography and written words, which are transferred into the top-most layers of the piece - giving the words a delicate, floating feeling. The hazy essence that the wax adds I feel accentuates the very nature of photography in a unique way. Just as images capture a moment frozen in time, as the wax is laid on the photo and begins to harden, that moment is encased yet again in a form of suspension. I feel the two mediums lend themselves to each other very well, and enjoy a meditative experience in creating them.
